Leon Tillage grew up the son of a sharecropper in a small town in North Carolina. Told in vignettes, this is his story about walking four miles to the school for black children, and watching a school bus full of white children go past. It's about his being forced to sit in the balcony at the movie theater, hiding all night when the Klansmen came riding, and worse. Much worse.

But it is also the story of a strong family and the love that bound them together. And, finally, it's about working to change an oppressive existence by joining the civil rights movement. Edited from recorded interviews conducted by Susan L. Roth, Leon's story will stay with readers long after they have finished his powerful account.

Leon's Story is the winner of the 1998 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Nonfiction.

Tillage, a black custodian in a Baltimore private school, reminisces about his childhood as a sharecropper's son in the South, and his youth as a civil-rights protester. He explains the mechanics of sharecropping and segregation, tells of his mistreatment and his father's murder at the hands of white teenagers out to ``have some fun,'' and relates his experiences with police dogs, fire hoses, and jail while following Martin Luther King's ideas of nonviolent protest. Tillage matter-of-factly recounts horrific events, using spare language that is laced with remarkable wisdom, compassion, and optimism. Such gentleness only gives his story more power, as he drives home the harder realities of his childhood. Although the collage illustrations are interesting, they are too moody and remote for the human spirit behind the words, and readers will regret Roth's decision--especially in light of the boy smiling so brightly on the cover--that ``even one photo would be too many for Leon Walter Tillage's words.'' Douglas S. Brooks, MS, is an exercise physiologist and personal fitness trainer with more than 20 years of experience. He co-owns Moves International Fitness, a provider of educational resources, continuing education, and live workshops to fitness professionals. Acknowledged as one of the country's premier personal trainers, Brooks is a well-known author, lecturer, trainer, and video personality. His counsel and input are sought on an international level, most recently by the International Sports Trainers Association, which appointed him vice president of the organization. He also is a member of IDEA and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).Brooks is a gold-certified personal trainer by the American Council on Exercise, and he is an IISA-certified in-line skating instructor. He previously operated a personal training facility for nine years; directed a 5,000-member health facility; participated in and coached college-level gymnastics; and was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan Health Science Department. In his free time, Brooks enjoys fitness activities of all kinds. He is a competitive tennis player, a marathon runner and Ironman triathlete, an avid alpine and Nordic skier, an in-line skater, and a rock climber and mountaineer. He lives in Mammoth Lakes, California, with his wife and two sons.

It's a good book more the most part. If you are not a certified personal trainer or are contemplating becoming one than this book is for you. If you already are a personal trainer there is good information but most likely you already know it. The first half of the book is almost entirely on the business aspect of it. While I agree that there are methods that will always be successful when it comes to selling/client retention/getting clients; the book needs to be updated badly. then in my opinion it would be a great resource. The most current edition was written in 2003. Since the internet played a minimal role than (and social media wasn't around,) There is little covered on that and I found myself just skimming through this whole section since things have changed so drastically since then. Its a good book to have as a reference and if you work in a corporate gym then it might be more beneficial to you. But if you're independent I just don't think its for you.

Douglass Brooks has given trainers several works to aid them in their pursuit of bringing health and wellness to their clients. This book not only draws together some of the information from some of his other works, but adds other information to give you a complete picture of your chosen field.

The book is a bit dated and there are better books out there, in my opinion, but overall it is a good book to read.

Douglass Brooks shows a complete understanding of the full gamut for Personal Trainers. His "Complete Book of Personal Training" covers A-Z of the subject. I especially like that he focuses so much on the goals of his customers, rather than how to fit your own intentions into their true needs. I recommend this book to anyone in the field, whether starting out, stepping up to the next level or just trying to be better in this profession. The only improvement I can recommend is an update to the book. I hope Mr. Brooks can find the time to issue a revised guide that addresses more recent changes in the field.

The book is based on starting your own personal training g business. I was under the impression it was in compass all aspects, still it is a good reference.

About the Author
A novelist, dramatist, short-story writer, and essayist, Zofia Nalkowska (1884-1954) was a leading proponent of the avant-garde of her day. A resident of Warsaw, she was an active member of the Polish PEN Club, the first female member of the Polish Academy of Literature, and the patron of a popular Warsaw literary salon. Her life in occupied Warsaw during World War II is the subject of her Wartime Diaries and Medallions.

Diana Kuprel has a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Toronto. She is a postdoctoral fellow for the Literary History Project, University of Toronto, and editor in chief of Books in Canada: The Canadian Review of Books.
