While this book is very well written, if you are easily grossed out or get queasy quickly, it may not be for you.With that being said, I am not the kind who finds gore or graphic violence disturbing. I found this book to be thoroughly engrossing. It had me clinging to every page. A true sci-fi thriller, this novel will keep fans engaged. The characters themselves are very well developed and easy to relate to. The author masterfully describes the scenes, emotions, and dialogues in a way that make them easy to picture.The author clearly uses the experiences he has as ex-military when writing about the adventures of his hero, Max Ahlgren. Not only does the book cater to the sci-fi community, but it also engages those who enjoy military reads with its thorough descriptions of equipment, tactics, and personal struggles of a combat-experienced service member.I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling, military-style sci-fi novel. I can’t wait to see what else Aslesen writes and look forward to more adventures from Max Ahlgren.

This is an awesome book! I just had to say that up front. This is especially important coming from me since I am not one that even likes science fiction novels, but I could not put this down.So much happens, the plot is super fast paced. I will warn this book is very very gory, and I do mean very gory... the author spares nothing in the details when describing the carnage. Also never get to attached to any certain character since many, well pretty much everyone in the story ends up brutally killed off. Yet, most killings, maybe not all, do serve a greater purpose in the story, which is not like other books with this much gore, it is there for a reason, its there to add to the drama shows just how dangerous the "creature" is and its ability since as the deaths pile up the people fighting it get smarter trying to discover ways to defeat it, but at the same time the "creature" also is learning.The story is complex and so are the characters. You will also go through a rollercoaster of emotions, you will laugh out loud, be shocked, amazed, horrified, get pissed off, be heartbroken, and heck even feel a little lovey by the end of this book. It is not by any means a short book but the fast paced nature of the plot makes it feel like a short book. I highly recommend this book! Totally a 5 out of 5! The book is also left open for future installments, so there will be a slight cliffhanger but it is not a major one that will make you mad that more was not resolved.

Existential: A Sci-Fi Horror Thriller by Ryan W. Aslesen is a must read if you like action thrillers. The book is very, very graphic (violence and language). The story takes place in the Alaskan wilderness and centers around ex-marine Max Ahlgren, his team of contractors, and their mission for Grey Industries. What was supposed to be a quick in/out mission to locate and extract an archeological team turns into the fight for their lives. Ms. Grey spared no expense to finance the project, but it's not quite your usual archeological dig. Something, some unknown creature, is out there, but it's not the only thing that they need to defend themselves from. With danger and death at every turn, this was very fast paced book, however, I never felt that it was rushed. This was my first experience with Ryan W. Aslesen and I'm pretty sure it will not be my last. This book gets two thumbs up from me.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Military guys chasing aliens around isn't really my thing but this book is so well written I couldn't help being sucked in.This book is first and foremost just really good writing. I didn't expect a debut novel to be this expertly crafted. You'd think this author had been publishing for years.A bunch of military guys running around with guns isn't normally the kind of story I would seek out, especially when i involves a lot of really gory deaths mixed in. But I was totally sucked in by the story line. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I was always anxious to see what was going to happen next.By the end I will admit I was a little fatigued with all the constant, really gory disturbing deaths, especially of characters I'd become invested in, but the ending was a decent payoff.There was a lot of military jargon and much discussion of various weapons. I'm definitely not well versed in this area so I can't tell you how realistic it is but it certainly felt genuine.The author has a lot of faith in the reader. They lead you on an adventure, use some pretty impressive vocabulary, and drop hints that let you figure things out as you go. Overall I'm very glad I got the chance to read that and recommend that you pick it up.

Action-packed but disappointingly predictable men vs. monsters match-up, complete with the obligatory evil corporate overlord. I bought this novel hoping for refreshing twists on the same old pick-em-off-one-at-a-time story we've already seen in countless movies. No twists. Not even any explanation about what the creatures were doing alive on a spaceship after millions of years, when they obviously were not the ones who brought it here. Also unanswered is why that ship came to Earth. And why the beasties are so determined to simply kill. I could see so much of this story coming from a mile off, including a mysteriously missing alien. Then there's a totally irrelevant sub-plot about a young man dying of cancer. And an ending that belongs with a totally different story. The author also failed to work in anything about Alaska, including how little daylight it gets in winter months. Setting was irrelevant, could have been anywhere. I give it three stars only grudgingly, because I did finish it. Just kept hoping it would get better. It did not.

If you're writing a Positive Change Arc, which 90% of people will be, then this is the book for you. It's very thorough, the examples wonderfully illustrate the points made, and it will help you to know exactly what to do, and when to do it, in your story. Sometimes it's even TOO thorough. After using it a couple of times, I started to delete a few questions from my template that were only re-worded versions of the previous questions.If you're writing any OTHER type of arc, welp. You're on your own. After devoting WHOLE CHAPTERS to each aspect for the Positive Change Arc, each ACT only gets one chapter for the Flat Change Arc, and the Negative Change Arcs get ONE THIRD of a chapter each, because the Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption Arcs are all covered in one fell swoop. I flipped back to the Positive Character Arc chapters to try to figure it out myself, but ... it didn't help. Even the DEFINITIONS given there are so geared toward the Positive Character Arc that it's difficult at best to determine how they're supposed to function in any other arc. Since my current WIP has more than just a Positive Character Arc going on for the protagonist, I was pretty disappointed, overall. Guess I'll just have to wander in the wilderness with the minor character arcs and hope for the best.

I have several books on character development, outlining and other aspects of writing in my writer's library. However, none of the references I have cover the material in this book. This book forges a link between character and plot development that I think many aspiring writers miss. This book is not character arcs in the abstract. This book ties character development aspects to particular points in the plot arc. For me this is a critical piece because it gives practical advice as to where and when certain things in the character arc should occur. Most of the book is spent on the positive character arc, but sufficient treatment is also give to a flat character arc and negative character arc. Numerous examples are given from familiar books and movies to show the various points of character development. So not only are the tips and advice practical, they come with practical examples so you can see exactly how different stories treat them. The book is worth the price of admission and I highly recommend it.

You could write a good novel just following her blog posts. The woman is a natural writer, teacher and coach. She has that 'it' factor. P.S. Buy all of her writing books. They are like suspenders for your pants! I am building my book right now using a lot of different tools, But K.M.'s are always right there at the center of the table. Everything gravitates back to her central concepts on structure and outline. I would have spent the last year holding onto my pants and cranking out a rambling missive with a few good ideas. but little conflict and readability. Now I am still outlining, and cannot wait to pour all those words onto paper with the knowledge that my first draft will have the borders of a book around it. Structure, characters, conflict, theme, plot points, you know....the foundation of a damn good novel. Then the real writing (editing) can finally begin.

This book’s discussion on how to develop a character arc takes the reader (and the character) step-by-step through the entire structure of the story, from the first plot point to the story’s conclusion. She discusses character arcs for three viewpoints – when the protagonist grows to accept truth, when the protagonist rejects truth and descends into defeat, and when he will neither grow nor begin a negative descent.As with all of K. M. Weiland’s writing guides, you won’t get the full benefit unless you engage with the book by answering each question in full. I started reading and working through this book when I was well into my own story. As I worked through the chapters and answered the questions one-by-one, I found affirmation that I was doing some things right. Working through each chapter’s questions prompts revelatory, “a-ha” moments, causing me to feel inspired. I am seeing the holes in my story as well, and am working to overcome them.I firmly recommend this book to writers who are looking for help along the way to developing their own story’s character arcs.

Really useful information and easy to understand but just not enough detail on non-positive arcs. I found Donald Maass to be more informative on the matter in a chapter of his craft book on emotion. While I recommend this for beginners, I would suggest a more seasoned writer looking for more depth to seek elsewhere.

Another insightful writing book by K.M Weiland. The subject of character arcs is organized and presented in a easily understood and accessible manner. I have yet to be disappointed by Weiland's author's guide and this ranks up there with Outlining Your Novel (my favorite book on the subject).What really draws me to her books is her enthusiasm for story telling. You can hardly read a chapter without feeling the author is doing what she was destined to do, writing stories and educating others on her processes, trials and errors. Her series is enjoyable and worth reading even if you never plan on writing a word. The examples she analyzes are from accessible media and I get a thrill every time she reveals an process and I realize, "so that's why the author/screen writer/director choose this path."I listened to the audio version of the book and the only complaint I have is that K.M. Weiland is not the narrator. This is not to take a thing away from Sonja Field who is a wonderful narrator and I could listen to her all day. It's only because after years of listening to Weiland's Helping Writers Become Authors podcast I have developed a crush on her voice and I associate it with curling up in front of a fire with a cup of cream and coffee and a good book.
