About the Author

Karen Morgaine, PhD, is a queer, white, academic with a penchant for critical theory and anarchist/Buddhist/feminist/post-colonial perspectives. After working in the domestic violence and community mental health fields for ten years, she completed her PhD in social work and social research at Portland State University. She fortuitously landed in a sociology department at California State University, Northridge, where she is able to teach a variety of courses related to social welfare and social justice including courses in community organizing, social movements, and LGBTQQI communities. Her research leans towards analysis of social movement framing and issues related to power and privilege within social movements and identity groups. When not in the classroom or in front of the computer, she can be found dining all around Los Angeles, biking/doing yoga/lifting weights, and laughing a lot with her partner.

My congratulations to these authors for their accomplishment in bringing anti-oppressive theory and practice as the organizing theme for a mainstream textbook in the United States. Faculty and students will benefit enormously from reading this book and developing a familiarity with the progressive concepts. This pioneering book does a tremendous job in moving anti-oppressive concepts forward and helping to radicalize social work.

I'm a graduate level social work student. This book has an extreme liberal bias to it painting liberalism as ideal and conservatism as some how regressive. It talks about terrorists groups as if they are great for communities and attacks anyone who is pro-life. It would be fine to present both sides or some middle ground. To present one extreme view as the right answer in my mind is highly unprofessional and has nothing to do with my ability to recognize social injustice and fight oppression.

Maybe it takes an artist to write about artists, but this collection of essays and descriptions of artists' work, life and personalities is wonderful. Almost every essay sent me off to the rabbit hole looking for more examples of the art discussed, and so I found the book very expansive. Have a laptop at hand as you read and explore and enjoy at will.

It's hard to find artists who can write well past the essay level, and also depart from today's artistic hermetic language. Add to that, his significant place in art, his background, and the context of his "high period" and you have a something verging on classic here. A great read, and thankful the artist felt impelled to put his well-considered, chiseled insights on paper.

The title is better than the book.Some insights into the making of art, but mostly anecdotes of personal experiences with and of the artists.

Read for book group. Some essays were too short to really deal with the subject.

Its great to read a real painters view.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised but my first reading of this book produced slight disappointment: I think David Salle is a better painter than writer about art. Probably as it should be, but it's a word of caution to prospective readers. Other reviewers here have pointed to his language stye as the problem. I'm not sure. His tone can be pedantic but is that the problem? Again, I'm not sure. I myself am not an artist but in reading about art I look for something like inspiration. In this book I found a little of that but less than expected. Occasionally he sounds enthusiastic but that can come across as calibrated or processed. I think it's partly a tone issue, but the book is serious and thoughtful enough that I'll keep it and possibly reread at some point. (I still think he's a very good painter.) I might get more out of a second reading.One more criticism: Each chapter has 1 reproduction but all are black-and-white. Would it have cost that much more to publish them in color?

Interesting read in parts but terribly self-indulgent author who has to prove how much and who he knows. For serious modern art lovers ONLY

The Wells-Resnikoff book on wavelets is in my opinionone of the best:-- both with regard to the math--the proofs and all that!--, and the applications. The ideas in the book are timeless, and, I expect, it will be a great book for decades to come. It is very strong on both scores. And it is beautifully written: It is all there,- the history, themotivation, the philosophical points, the applications, the guided tours with friendly author-explainations of what it is all about. For me, this book was a page-turner. I read it ona long plane flight,- on my way to a wavelet conference in Guangzhou, China. -- And I didn't have jet-lag when I arrivedmore than a day later. It may be a bit demanding on some students, but it will be well worth their effort!

I am a graduate student in Math and was attracted to the book because it treats topics -- wavelets of rank other than 2, tilings, and others -- that are missing from many of the standard texts. Wavelets are approached through the introduction of matrices with certain algebraic properties rather than through orthonormal bases in L2 or scaling functions.Interesting, say I. This will give me a different perspective on many of the basic results and let me read some papers I've been struggling with.The book, however, did not fully live up to my expectations. Many difficult concepts are introduced in a cursory way, and the proofs skip a lot of details. This is not uncommon in graduate level texts, as it is expected that the reader can fill in the gaps. When I filled in the gaps, however, I discovered more than a few errors. Often, these were just distractions such as missing or incorrect constants. But at least one proof contained more serious errors.Graduate level math is hard enough without having to figure out what the authors *meant* to say. I would advise a student of my level of sophistication to look elsewhere.

If the authors were less enthusiastic about mathematics for its own sake, they probably would have written a better book. This one is said to be suitable for undergraduates, but I don't think so. I have a master's degree in electrical engineering, and several of the mathematical concepts they mention were just vaguely familiar names to me. That would be OK if I were persuaded that those concepts were essential to an understanding of wavelets, but I'm not. The book seems somewhat ill organized as well; new terminology should be defined before it's used, not fifty pages later.
